Why John Legend, T-Pain, And Papoose Have Agreed To Have Their Voices Cloned By YouTube Using AI

On Nov. 16, YouTube introduced an AI experiment called Dream Track, according to a blog post. Hosted in YouTube Shorts and powered by Google DeepMind, the tool is said to have been created “to help explore how the technology could be used to create deeper connections between artists and creators, and ultimately, their fans.”

Among the nine artists who have joined YouTube’s initial phase are John Legend, T-Pain, and Papoose. Under the collaboration “to shape the future of AI in music,” the artists will give selected U.S. creators access to their AI-generated voice to use in a YouTube Shorts soundtrack, the blog post explains.

“Being a part of YouTube’s Dream Track experiment is an opportunity to help shape possibilities for the future,” Legend said, per the post. “As an artist, I am happy to have a seat at the table and I look forward to seeing what the creators dream up during this period.”

“The development of AI technology is happening quickly and we should be a part of that process,” T-Pain added. “I have always been about pushing the boundaries of technology and harnessing it to make the most interesting music for my fans. Who knows what the future holds but joining hands with YouTube and Google to help shape that future feels like a great first step.”

YouTube claims that its AI music experiments were launched for the benefit of those in the music industry.

“We’ve been exploring the possibilities of how AI can empower creativity alongside artists, songwriters, producers and our partners while also identifying its challenges,” the post wrote. “By testing and learning, we can better understand how to enhance artist and industry opportunity and deepen fan engagement, benefiting the broader music community.”
