Houston,TX, native and 32-time Grammy award-winning recording artist Beyoncé put on a halftime show performance at the NFL’s Christmas Day football game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. She performed several hits from her most recent album, “Cowboy Carter” which pays homage to the often-forgotten Black history of country music. Mrs. Knowles-Carter, dressed in all-white cowboy regalia, sat atop a white horse led by a Black cowboy for her grand entrance onto the field. She was joined by backup dancers and the third-ward Texas Southern University marching band, Ocean of Soul. They delivered a “Homecoming”-esque show that featured songs like “Blackbiird,” “Sweet Honey Buckiin,” and “Leviis Jeans,” which she collaborated with Post Malone, Shaboozey, Tanner Addell, Britney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts on.
As Forbes notes, Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” World Tour earned over $600 million in revenue. While she has yet to announce concert dates for her “Cowboy Carter” project, the BeyHive got a taste of what could come with the singer’s larger-than-life halftime concert. Here’s everything we know about the bag Queen B secured for her hard work.
Has Beyoncé Done A Super Bowl Halftime Show Before?
In 2013, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, Beyoncé performed alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams at the Super Bowl, thrilling Destiny’s Child fans. It marked their first performance together since 2005 and became the second-most watched halftime show at the time. However, it wouldn’t be the mother of three’s last appearance on the biggest stage in football.
In 2016, towards the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, Beyoncé performed during the halftime show at the NFL’s Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. She was joined by Coldplay’s Chris Martin and “24K Magic” singer Bruno Mars. The Bay Area performance fittingly paid homage to the Black Panther movement as Bey and her dancers donned black leather outfits with gold trimmings before the Denver Broncos took home the victory over the Carolina Panthers.
How Much Did Netflix Pay For Beyoncé’s Halftime Show Performance?
While Super Bowl performances are typically unpaid opportunities for artists to take on a well-watched main stage, entertainment enthusiasts are curious about the Southern starlet’s deal with Netflix. As Sports Illustrated reports, Beyoncé inked a three-part performance contract with Netflix in 2019 for $60 million. The NFL’s Christmas Day show was the second of three installments, with her “Homecoming” show at Coachella launching the trilogy.
This suggests the “Obsessed” actress made $20 million for her “Cowboy Carter” Beyoncé Bowl at the Ravens vs. Texans game on Christmas Day, available exclusively on the streaming platform. Between the icon’s performance and these two games, in part characterized by four of the NFL’s Black quarterbacks, there were victories all around.
What This Means For Beyoncé, Netflix And The NFL Moving Forward
After becoming a fixture onstage during the “Renaissance” Tour, Beyoncé’s firstborn daughter, Blue Ivy, joined her on the field. While she was criticized for her performance early on, the young entertainer insisted she continue to practice and dance alongside her mother, eventually shutting haters up. Besides the major moment with Netflix, the famous duo celebrated their work in the recently released “Mufasa: The Lion King” prequel film from Disney this holiday season, proving Bey’s dedication to creating generational wealth for her family.
As for Netflix and the NFL, the entities have agreed to a $150 million deal of shared content, the NY Post reports. It’s currently unknown whether Beyoncé’s third performance in her streaming deal will be on a football field. However, we do expect to see more football games and live sports content from Netflix in the new year.
